The Time for Change is Now: Organizational Solutions for Burnout in Public Health

In our previous post, we showed how burnout and moral injury were systemic threats to the institution of public health and the health of the nation. Public health leaders will need to take bold action to address these issues. A shift is needed to create a culture of well-being in public health organizations and across the public health system. Leaders tend to focus on individual well-being programs while overlooking the larger systemic issues that lead to burnout. Adjusting strategies to address burnout at the individual, institutional and systems levels is important as public health leaders work toward the future vision of public health. PHAB’s 2022 Standard and Measures includes a section devoted to “Building a Supportive Work Environment.” This standard empowers public health institutions to invest in their work environment, focus on wellness, work-life balance, employee recognition, inclusive culture and using employee feedback to drive institutional change. In this post we lay out six strategies that public health leaders can use to meet these PHAB standards and create a culture of well-being that permeates throughout the public health system.

Cynthia's Cooking Corner

Queen's Coronation Chicken Salad

I'm about as big of fan of royalty as Mark Twain was, but this salad is amazing. It was one of the items at a tea party that I went to and I modified it once I got home because I enjoyed it so much. The picture is my friend Ericka and I at the tea party.

Ingredients

1 T. neutral oil

3 T. shallot diced very fine

2.5 T. curry powder

2 T. jam ( I use fig, but apricot or orange would also work)

1 t. mustard

1 t. lemon juice

1/2 cup mayo

1.5 t. salt

1 t. black pepper

2.5 cups chicken breast (12 oz.)

½ cup red grapes

½ cup flaked almonds

Steps

  1. Sous vide the chicken at 150 degrees for 70 minutes, or poach in a small amount of liquid. Season with salt and pepper.

  2. In a non-stick pan, toast the almonds and set aside.

  3. Sauté the shallots in the oil for a minute. Treat it more like garlic and don't let it get too hot. Add the curry powder and cook for another 30 seconds until aromatic. Add the jam and mustard. All these things mix better when they are a little warm.

  4. Mix all the ingredients, adding the grapes and almonds last.

  5. Chill for at least an hour and serve on a croissant.

Shawnee County Data Walk: Driving Meaningful Conversation About Health - October 30

On Oct. 30, 2023, the United Way of Kaw Valley in collaboration with Communities Supporting Early Literacy community partners hosted a dynamic in-person event to reflect on these factors and drive meaningful conversation about health in Shawnee County. The Data Walk featured eight posters with local data about health regarding these factors and the importance of improving community health. The eight posters can be seen at https://www.khi.org/articles/shawnee-county-data-walk/ .

Improving these factors often requires a multifaceted approach that begins with mobilizing the community to act. During the Data Walk, participants met with other community leaders and offered new and challenging interpretations of the data. Attendees considered radical transformation that gets at the root of complex issues in Shawnee County. The group heard from organizers and supporters of the event, including Ed O’Malley, President and CEO of the Kansas Health Foundation, who facilitated the event.
