This year’s theme for Black History Month is Black Health and Wellness.
The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) says this theme “acknowledges the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.” More info at: https://asalh.org/black-history-themes/
If you’re interested in adding to your reading list, here are some recommendations from ASALH. And if you have book recommendations to share, we encourage you to provide them in the comments at the end of this page!
In Kansas, you can take a virtual or in-person tour along the African American History Trail, designed and promoted by The Kansas African American Museum. From the website: The History Trail tells the story of the African American contributions to Kansas at its various historical sites, chronicling the people, places, and events that created this rich history. It is a shared history of all Kansans that is all … About the Journey.
