Kansas Wineries: KC/Lawrence Edition

Check out these Wyatt-approved recommendations for local wineries in the KC and Lawrence Areas. While there are several more wineries of note, this list includes four places Wyatt has personally visited.

Amigoni Urban Winery

  • Location: 1505 Genessee Suite 100, Kansas City, MO 64102

  • Reason to Visit: Located in the historic Daily Drovers Telegram Newspaper Building in the Stockyards District of the West Bottoms, this urban winery is the perfect relaxing wine destination – without the trip outside of the city. Michael and Kerry Amigoni, the duo behind the winery, have struck the perfect balance of refined and relaxed. The space is stunning and a perfect date spot – but the board games and books throughout keep things from feeling too serious. As for wine, the focus is on traditional dry wines made from European varietals such as Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay.

KC Wine Co.

  • Location: 13875 S. Gardner Rd. Olathe, KS 66061

  • Reason to Visit: Grab your sunglasses, a few buddies and buckle up for a fun time out at KC Wine Co. Located outside just ten minutes west of Olathe, this winery is perfect for a wine-filled day in the sun. Lawn games, a vineyard to walk through and spacious picnic tables make this a perfect spot to enjoy one of their wine cooler slushes while leaving the work week behind. The Barrel House, which looks and feels like a giant wine barrel turned into an event space, is where you can enjoy a wine or cider sample. Besides the wine and cider, KC Wine Co. Gives visitors other reasons to visit every weekend – live music, food trucks and other seasonal events make for a great time. The Sunflower Red, a semi-sweet that’s easy on the palate, is an approachable crowd pleaser. For those wanting something more robust, the dry Chambourcin wine is rich and deep in both flavor and color.

Pirtle Winery

  • Location: 502 Spring St. Weston, MO 64089

  • Reason to Visit: If you’ve never taken the trip up to Weston, MO let Pirtle Winery be another reason to visit. This quaint little town located a short drive north of KC is the perfect day trip destination. Soda shops, a Polish Pottery store, and local food spots are just some of the adventures to take in. Home to the Holladay Distillery, the Weston Brewing Company (and its famous O’Malley’s Pub) Pirtle is in great beverage company and more than carries its weight. Located in a converted church, complete with Pirtle stain glass windows, this winery feels timeless in all of the right ways. While located in a historic town and space, their wine selection is constantly evolving and unique. Their bestselling sweet wines are now available in convenient four pack cans, and their Aronia Berry Wine – made from local Native American berries - is both unique and refreshing. While you can probably find some of their offerings in local wine stores, a trip to Weston, and this gem of a place, shouldn’t be missed.

Crescent Moon Winery

  • Location: 15930 246thSt. Lawrence, KS 66044

  • Reason to Visit: For those living in Lawrence, a quick trip out in the country north of town will be rewarded with a relaxing and laid-back winery experience. Owned and operated by Keith and Cheryl Hand, proud Kansans who both serve in the National Guard, Crescent Moon is the perfect spot to enjoy a slow and easy weekend with family and friends. Their country winery and vineyard is casual and unpretentious. You can walk among the vines, say hello to the horses in the barn, and relax by the pond while you take in the countryside views. Using Kansas grown grapes, Crescent Moon has options ranging from dry to sweet. The Chat Noir, an auburn colored sweet and complex wine made from five different grapes and pairs perfectly with a lawn chair and sandals. Several of their wines, such as the Chardonel and Seyval Blanc – both Kansas whites – now feature beautiful historic Kansas artwork on the bottles, making them perfect addition to any wall wine rack.
