Kari Bruffett presented policy recommendations on the new federal Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) designation during a webinar hosted by the Rural Health Information Hub (RHIhub). As a member of the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Services (NACRHHS), Bruffett presented alongside the committee's chair, former Kansas Governor Dr. Jeff Colyer, and committee member Mark Holmes, Director, Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at University of North Carolina.
Wyatt Beckman participated in a virtual panel titled Policy Development in Public Health. The panel was part of the Public Health Competency Development Series put together by the Indiana University School of Public Health. The Jan. 25 event was free to attend, with the primary audience being current and former IU School of Public Health Students. Wyatt was joined on the panel by Ryan Jackson, Public Health Advisor at the CDC, and Monique French, Senior Director at Rx4good. The panel received positive feedback from attendants and was a great opportunity for Wyatt to share about his health policy-related work and opportunities at KHI.
Miranda Steele, Chair, Governor’s Council on Fitness, participated in the 12th annual Kansas Community Health Promotion Summit to join state and community leaders in recognizing the 2022 Kansas Health Champion awardees. These individuals and organizations are recognized for making a positive impact in their communities by modeling and encouraging healthy behaviors through physical activity programs and other initiatives. Tatiana Lin and Linda Sheppard delivered a presentation to the Kansas Health Foundation Board of Directors. The presentation focused on issues related to medical marijuana efficacy, potential impacts on accidental exposures, driving under the influence, opioid mortality and crime. They also discussed racial equity considerations examined by other states and actions taken to incorporate them in medical marijuana policies or their implementation. In addition, they provided an overview of the comprehensive medical marijuana programs implemented in 36 states and D.C. in the context of two Kansas bills and summarized the differences between the two bills that are available for consideration by the 2022 Legislature.

Bourbon County community leaders from the City of Fort Scott and the City of Bronson came together to discuss how health can be considered in policy decisions. The workshop was convened by the Healthy Bourbon County Action Team (HBCAT) as part of the Pathways to a Healthy Kansas initiative. Tatiana Lin and Wyatt Beckman were honored to facilitate the workshop.
