Staff Spotlight: Cheng-You Tsai, Analyst

Updated: Sep 10, 2021

What has been your favorite project?

My favorite project has been Shawnee County COVID-19 analytic support. The analytical work generates information to help one of our key partners with their decision making and operation consideration to improve the health of Kansans. I utilized my data visualization skill (ArcGIS) for those complex data to provide meaningful information. I created the confirmed case rate map and vaccination rate map to lead us to look into zip-codes. After that, I created the 2x2 table to contrast zip code areas, the Health Department can consider the similarities and differences between these areas (i.e., high-low vs. high-high) to learn and devise approaches to take the potential actions and then improve the vaccination rate.

What is the best career lesson you’ve learned so far?

Focus on developing and using your strengths. Finding out what you enjoy doing and what you’re truly good at as well as how to develop those areas is an important lesson you can learn at work. While it may take time, determining where you excel in your career can be one of the most rewarding gifts of having a job and something you can’t learn outside the workforce.

What do you do when you are not working?

Most of the time I will rest at home and clean up the apartment. But sometimes my friends and I will go to explore some attractions, cafes or restaurants in Lawrence or KC area.

Where’s your favorite place in the world? Tell us more about this place.

My favorite place is Taiwan. It is my hometown country. Taiwan is known for some of the best food in the world. There's a wide variety of snacks, hot foods, and interesting things to try. Some of the common local dishes include Beef Noodle Soup, Oyster Pancake, Wontons, Hot Pot, Mango Shaved Ice, Boba tea, Stinky Tofu, and really good/cheap breakfast. I live in Taipei where the capital of Taiwan is. Life functions and public transportation are very convenient. You can reach anywhere in Taipei without even driving.

If you could have any superpower what would it be?

It would be mind reading skills. Because I think it is difficult to guess what other people think. If I can read minds, I can learn the inner thoughts and hidden emotions of the other person in any meeting or conversation. This may make the conversation between the two parties more efficient and smoother and achieve results that both parties are satisfied with.

What is one food that you cannot resist?

Whatever my mom cooks.
