Whittlin' Wyatt

The rumors are true: Wyatt now whittles. Read his story below.

The exact reason I became interested in whittling is a little fuzzy, but it probably included some combination of the following ingredients: an old soul, a tendency to wander down strange YouTube rabbit holes and a desire to create something tangible with my hands. Before I knew it, I had talked about a desire to try it long enough that I was gifted an X-acto knife and some basswood. After a few cuts, I was hooked. I quickly bought some starter knives, some safety gear and some books.

My first project was a “5-minute Owl” that took me an hour to finish and isn’t worth sharing. My second project was a simple holiday penguin. I followed a guide in a Christmas ornament edition of Woodcarving Illustrated. I painted the hat green to stick with a festive Christmas color.

Next I made a second penguin. This time I tried my own variation and made a shorter penguin with a blue hat and a pom. They now sit on the mantle/TV shelf above my fireplace.

Wanting to change things up, I decided to make a pumpkin next. I saw a sample design and then had enough of an idea to do the rest of it on my own. The size and weight ended up working well for a simple fridge magnet now proudly clinging to my parent’s fridge.

Finally, my most recent project is a little grumpy old man I carved into a stick I found while walking my dog, Biscuit. This is the first human-style face I’ve made, and I had some guidance/inspiration from a couple of the books I have. He ended up with a pointed end so he can be inserted into the soil of a potted plant and act as a grumpy “plant protector,” something he’s doing for one of my parents’ plants right now.
